For the finest selection of French limestone fireplaces, check out the Internet. Many manufacturers and retailers have online sites, allowing you to compare prices and offers from the comfort of your own home, before purchasing your limestone fireplace.

french-limestone-fireplaceManorhouse Stone is primarily an Internet-based company, and have been in the stone fireplace business for 30 years. The company is based on a farm in Leicestershire, and, although most business is done online, visits to the premises can be arranged via appointment.

All Manorhouse stone fireplaces are carved from natural French Limestone or Sandstone, and designs are taken from the great English houses of the 1300s and 1400s – notably, the Tudor, Elizabethan and Jacobean eras.

The excellent thing about Manorhouse French limestone fireplaces is that they come in a range of sizes: extra small, small, large and extra large. These closely  emulate the fireplace sizes of the above period, in order that all sizes of room may be catered for.

In addition to the collection above, Manorhouse does a ‘Bolection’ range of fireplaces: these feature the classic curved form, popular in Southern France in the 18th century, and are very popular as they make a beautiful focal point in any home. There are 4 different types of fireplace in the Bolection range, and Manorhouse are happy to produce such fireplaces in different size requirements. See the website for details.

Manorhouse is available to work on a commission basis, and the company has been called on to design unique fireplaces in the UK and all over Europe. Examples of the amazing sandstone and French limestone fireplaces the company has designed can be viewed on their website; nothing is too complicated or too much trouble for the highly experienced masons at Manorhouse. The French Limestone Fireplace

August 6th, 2009

French limestone fireplaces have been in existence for hundreds of years. A variety of stone known as Caen has been used in France since Roman times, and extensively so since the 12th century – this is due to its exceptional durability and workability. Later, it was also popularly used in manufacture of fireplaces in England, Canada and North America.  Most French limestone quarries are found in and around the town of Caen in Normandy, whilst the hardest French limestone is found in Burgundy and the Loire Valley.

french-limestone-fireplaceThe French limestone fire is available in all architectural styles, from Renaissance and Rococo, through to the Empire style. Original antique French fireplaces are widely available from architectural salvage/reclamation yards and can add charm and character to any room. If the expense of such a fireplace is out of reach, worry not. There are many excellent reproduction and contemporary fireplaces made from French limestone, at reasonable prices. Increasingly, architectural stonemasons are commissioned by customers to make bespoke French limestone fires and fireplaces.

As discovered earlier, stone is an excellent material in the building of fireplaces, for many reasons. In its natural state, stone has a particular rustic beauty and texture, and it is also available in other finishes and textures such as rough or polished. This makes the French limestone fire an ideal addition to the modern home -it may also be combined with other materials such as wood, glass or metal to give a unique look. There is no doubt that French limestone is a versatile and flexible material, whilst at the same time being functional and decorative. Whether you wish to achieve the classical or contemporary look in your home, a French limestone fireplace can achieve both aims.
