Stone and marble are both ancient materials, and have been used in the manufacture of fireplaces for hundreds of years – stone since the history of fireplaces began. However, stone and marble fireplaces have the capacity to sit well in whatever setting they are put into, be it traditional or modern. These are very popular today, and the two materials used together make for a very attractive fireplace – the roughness and rusticity of the stone complements the clean lines and smoothness of the marble perfectly. As the saying goes, opposites attract.

Fireplace World sells a huge range of stone and marble fireplaces. Fireplace components are sold separately, so fires, mantels, back panels, and hearths may be mixed and matched, according to individual tastes.

Fireplace World sells a wide range of marble fireplaces from all periods, including Georgian, Victorian and Edwardian, right up to the contemporary age. Several types of marble are used, including solid marble and several shades of stylish micro marble, and all types of marble are available in a wide range of colours and finishes.

An excellent range of stone fireplaces is also available, and these are very much in demand today. Like marble, stone is easy to carve into the clean lines popularly used in both traditional and contemporary styling. Fireplace World stocks a number of different stone fireplaces, including sandstone and limestone.

Why not browse the internet and let your imagination run away with you? Try pairing a stone back panel and hearth with a marble mantel, or vice versa – experiment with the different types and colours of stone and marble until you find a stone and marble fireplace you really like.

‘Be Modern’ have been one of the UK’s largest fireplace manufacturers for over 40 years, and they offer an excellent range of marble fireplaces, in addition to timber and stone ones. There are no fewer than 16 different Be Modern marble fireplaces, in a wide range of traditional and contemporary styles.

The Shelby micro marble fireplace features a Tudor arch mantel, and comes in two colours – marfil and pearl stone. This fireplace is very attractive and will make a worthy focal point in any room. Comes in 2 heights – 1170mm and 1345mm.

The Cassan marble fireplace is in a modern style, featuring columns at either end of the mantel. This together with the use of clean lines, achieves a feeling of symmetry and balance. Like the Shelby, the Cassan comes in 2 colours – marfil and pearl stone – but only comes in one size (1170mm height).

The Tamora is a beautiful example of a Be Modern marble fireplace, with its gracefully arched mantel and matching back panel and hearth. It is available in pearl stone and marfil micro marble, and comes in one size – 1345mm height.

The Ophelia from Be Modern is in an unusual contemporary styling, and the mantel features an unusual ‘stepping’ pattern. The fireplace mantel is in pure white micro marble and comes with black granite back panel and hearth – the perfect colouring for the modern home. The Ophelia comes in one size – 1220mm height.

To view these, and the rest of the Be Modern marble fireplace collection, visit the website. The company manufacture gas fires and electric fires to complement their marble fireplaces, and these are also available to view on the website. Better still, if you wish to buy one of the Be Modern marble fires and fire surrounds, the company list stockists on their website.

Marble is a very hardwearing substance that requires very little maintenance. Thus, cleaning a marble fireplace is quick and easy work. Here are a few tips to keep your marble fireplace in tip-top condition:

1. Usually, dust and any marks can be removed using a damp cloth. Simply wipe over and then buff with a clean dry cloth to a shine –doing this once or twice a week is sufficient to keep the fireplace nice and clean.

2. For any tough stains, such as soot, use a non-abrasive cleaner – there are special marble cleaners on the market. Do not use abrasive powdered cleaners, as these will scratch and damage the marble. High alkaline solutions are good for removing soot, as it is an extremely greasy substance. Such solutions are very strong, so always wear gloves when using and, if possible, a facemask as well. Cover flooring, wood and fabrics to protect from the solution. Before removing soot stains, remove any specks of soot with a vacuum cleaner.

3. After cleaning a marble fireplace, a marble polish can be added for extra shine. Make sure any marble polish you use contains tin oxide, and apply with a soft clean cloth then buff to a shine. Try not to place anything directly on the marble, placing coasters under cups and glasses. Marble is porous and any kind of acid will damage it, such as vinegar, wine, juice and soft drinks. If you can, keep these well away from your marble fireplace. If you do accidentally spill an acidic substance on your marble fireplace, clean up immediately using plenty of water.

4. Other methods of cleaning a marble fireplace that people swear by are using baby wipes – quick and convenient- and using soapy water. Some simply dust at regular intervals.

Marble really is hardwearing, and adopting one of the simple methods above to clean your marble fireplace will keep it looking good for many years.

Of all fireplaces, the marble fireplace is, and always has been, the most luxurious and opulent. For hundreds of years, marble has been used to fashion fireplaces and fireplace mantels, with grand versions in stately homes and also in ordinary homes, albeit on a much smaller scale. Traditionally, only the most opulent marble was used, in white and selected rare colours, but these became harder to locate and also very expensive. Today, there are many types, styles and colours of marble fireplace. The 3 main types of marble used in the manufacture of such fireplaces are:

Natural Marble: has a smooth texture and comes in a selection of colours – a popular marble used is Carrara marble, a white-blue type from Italy.

Micro Marble: is made from natural marble pieces that are crushed and the pieces mixed together with resin, then polished. Micro marble has a smooth finish and, like natural marble, is cool to the touch. Comes in a wide range of colours.

Conglomerate Marble: is manufactured in the same way as micro marble (compacted together and mixed with resin), but the pieces of marble used are much larger. There is also greater variation of size and colour. Like natural marble and micro marble, conglomerate marble is cool to the touch.

Marble may be one of the most expensive fireplace materials, but any outlay is more than worth it. The marble fireplace has been providing a timeless beauty to homes for centuries, providing a stunning focal point and bringing a touch of luxury and grandeur to any room it graces. Marble is also a very strong material and will last for many years – in fact, a lifetime. It requires little or no maintenance to keep it looking good – simply wipe over with a damp cloth from time to time. Regarding fireplaces made from natural marble, a distinct advantage is their uniqueness – due to individual shading and markings, no two will ever be the same.

There are many types of marble fireplace, both traditional and modern. Original period marble fireplaces and mantels are available, but these are very expensive – see this selection at Britain’s Heritage. English Fireplaces sells an excellent selection of hand-carved marble fireplaces, and offer a bespoke service creating both period and modern designs. For more information, contact the company.

Whichever style you choose, it is sure to bring a touch of luxury and grandeur to your home for many years to come.
